Montreal Canadiens fan Richard Dakin had a pleasant chat with New York Islanders legend Bryan Trottier during an autograph session before Monday’s NHL Oldtimers Hockey Challenge against the Greater Victoria Firefighters at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

“I thought Montreal’s five Stanley Cups in a row were impressive but, I have to admit, you guys [1980-1983 New York Islanders] were good with your four straight,” said Dakin, as he got an autograph for his grandson Maximilian.

“But I didn’t care much for that goalie of yours.”

Trottier chuckled and responded: “Billy [Smith] is playing in the [Oldtimers] game tonight and you should meet him. He’s a great guy.”

Former Islanders Trottier, Smith and Bob Bourne joined other former NHLers such as Dale Hawerchuk, Glenn Anderson, Cliff Ronning, Bernie Nicholls, Bob Probert, Theo Fleury and Chemainus’s Doug Bodger in last night’s game, which raised funds for the Mustard Seed Food Bank.
